  • Atheist Quotes

I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive: You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil--you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself.
    Dan Barker

He that will not reason is a bigot; he that cannot reason is a fool; he that dares not reason is a slave.
    William Drummond

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Atheism: What It Is And Why It Is

Metaphysical naturalism

Atheism is a term that is often misunderstood even by atheists themselves and constantly by theists. Atheism in it’s simplest definition is just a + theism where a as a prefix simply means without. Put in other terms that simply means one has a lack of belief in a deity. Commonly atheism is considered to be a rejection of theism either implicitly or explicitly. Let me clarify one thing before I go much further. The new atheism or anti-theism is in fact a subset of atheism, much like the government here in the USA has both democrats and republicans, but they are not representative of atheism as a whole. I must answer the claim made by many new atheists that ‘old’ atheists were much less vocal and satisfied with a live and let live attitude. To them I have one question, have you ever heard about Madalyn Murry O’Hair? A great book to read about her is The Atheist: Madalyn Murray O’Hair. I have heard many people, both atheist and theist alike, claim atheism means god doesn’t exist. Of course there is the oft heard claim by theists that atheism requires faith because their god is evolution. To put it simply, theism requires faith in order to believe nor is their any evidence to support their belief so faith is necessary. Continue reading

Glory

Tonight I made my daily trip to The Panda’s Thumb and found this interesting picture.

Which lead me to the Wikipedia about this phenomena. There are records of this happening in China dating back as far as 63 AD (under the name Buddha’s Light). One of the pictures I found particularly striking was…

Which led me  to thinking about a remarkable similarity between this phenomena and a halo. I had always thought all appearances of the Virgin Mary were instances of pareidolia yet there was one instance of how she was depicted (not an appearance) holding the baby Jesus with a halo appearing around her head.

Think it is safe to say that nothing supernatural was going on in regards to the halo.

Islam

As I was surfing the web this morning I came across this picture.

Which made me wonder how better the world would be if this is what Radical Islam really was.

Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body

In Your Inner Fish, Neil Shubin tells the story of evolution by tracing the organs of the human body back millions of years, long before the first creatures walked the earth. By examining fossils and DNA, Shubin shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our head is organized like that of a long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genome look and function like those of worms and bacteria.

The beginning  of Your Inner Fish deals with Shubin’s search for a fossil of a creature that The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection said must exist but had yet to be found.

An intermediate stage between fish and reptile had long been hypothesized to have existed during the Late Devonian, some 375 million years ago. Sure enough, in some exposed rocks from the Late Devonian, Shubin’s team discovered something positively astounding. A fish with wrists. Continue reading

Amphibious Cat

In the wetlands and flood plains of south-east Asia there is a cat with webbed feet. Last I   checked, cats hate water but this cat is different. It actually is an excellent swimmer and the kittens have been observed playing for hours in basins full of water. The scientific (species) name is Prionailurus planiceps and they split from the seven other major groups of cats about six million years ago.
