  • Atheist Quotes

I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive: You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil--you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself.
    Dan Barker

He that will not reason is a bigot; he that cannot reason is a fool; he that dares not reason is a slave.
    William Drummond

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Church and Scientific Advancement

Scientific advancement was pretty much stomped into the ground by the church during the beginning in the dark ages and lasting through much of the middle ages. Just look at the rate of scientific advancement prior to and after these points in time and the conclusion is plain to anyone not afflicted by Christianity‘s protective glaucoma.

Blastocyst, labeled in English

If not for this sad period of science being stifled by the church, Columbus could have landed on the Moon instead of the Americas. Cancer might have been cured sometime in the 11th century but to the church it was much more important to stifle intellectual pursuits so they may teach the word of god, often at the point of a sword as seen by the inquisitions. I bet by now your asking yourself what does this have to do with anything in our time here in the 21st century. The dark ages have surely stopped and the widespread stifling of science has been ended by the church yet there remains a few points where the church just won’t let go. I am going to ignore their insistence that creation ‘science’, which isn’t a science, be taught in public schools right alongside real science. I will ignore their other medieval hold outs but I do want to address what may very well be the most disgusting and evil objection they currently hold. That is the regard they hold for ‘life’ in the form of the soul that exists in stem cells. There are two types of stem cells, on is adult stem cells and the other is embryonic stem cells. It is Embryonic stem cells used for research the church has a major problem with. They feel the embryo they are derived from have a right to life. Let’s take a step back for a moment and examine what an embryonic stem cell is. An embryonic stem cell is, as can be seen by the name, derived from an embryo. To be more specific they are derived from a human embryo and that is an undeniable fact. What the church, and lots of people, fail to realize is that these eggs are fertilized in vitro, in a test tube, and then donated, with the full informed consent of the donors, to the labs that do the research. When this blastocyst, preimplantation embryo, is about 5 days old the stem cells are removed from the innermost of the blastocyst’s three layers so they may be isolated. A blastocyst is essentially a mostly hollow little microscopic ball of between 50-150 cells in three layers. There is the trophoblast, blastocel and finally the inner cell mass where we get the stem cells from. Using an average of 100 cells you may wonder what a blastocyst compares to. Let’s see shall we. The number of animal brain cells mentioned are neurons.

  • Brain Of An Ant – 10000
  • Brain Of A Honeybee – 850000 cells
  • Brain Of A fruit fly – 250000 cells
  • Brain Of A cockroach – 1000000 cells
  • Brain Of A Dog – 160000000 cells
  • Brain Of A Cat – 300000000 cells
  • Brain Of A Human – 100000000000 cells
  • Diseases and conditions where stem cell treatm...

    Potential for research

As is plain to see, a blastocyst is neither human nor is it comparable [cellwise] to anything in the short list above. Not even touching on the research potential of stem cell research seen in the image on the right but just in the actual application in medicine, for an example see skin grafts, it is apparent that the church would rather save a meager collection of 100 cells that are not even human nor have they been fertilized or grown in a human body than save the lives of a burn victim through skin grafts or promote life saving medical research. This is a religion that sanctifies human life?
