I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive: You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil--you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself.
    Dan Barker

He that will not reason is a bigot; he that cannot reason is a fool; he that dares not reason is a slave.
    William Drummond

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

The Mark Of The Beast

"666 - The Number of the Beast"

The Number of the Beast

This is a concept most of us are familiar with since it is written about throughout pop culture and even in a song by Iron Maiden, Woe to you O earth and sea for the Devil sends the beast with wrath because he knows the time is short Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number/its number is six hundred and sixty six.I would like to look at Revelation 13:16-18.

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

If this wasn’t an acid induced dream by John, god made it very clear that what the number of the beast is but the mark of the beast is what Christians want to avoid. Did the bible tell us what the mark is or did god play a cruel trick by telling us not to get it but not tell us what it is? If you believe the bible, you obviously want to avoid the mark but how can it be determined?

First off, the number of the beast is not the mark so knowing the number is no help. We know it will be on either the right hand or forehead but other than that we don’t know any other details. Let me say right now that the “teaching” that the mark of the beast is a bar code is both foolish and wrong as shall be seen.

What do we know about a mark? What can a mark be? In order to keep this article down to a reasonable length let me suggest a sign or a signature. Yes I know it is a ‘leap’ but if one cares to check the logic of the leap they can and will find it is a reasonable assumption. Now the question is what is the sign or signature of god as given in the bible? From that it isn’t too hard to determine what the sign or signature of the beast is since it is invariably in direct opposition to god’s.

Without resorting to a numerous list of bible references one can see that the High Sabbaths and the seventh day Sabbath are the signature or mark of god. The high Sabbaths are the first and seventh day of Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the first and eighth days of Sukkoth. Apparently the mark of the beast is in direct opposition as the bible often shows the beast [as either the false prophet or Satan] often imitates god in reverse.

Now we have to determine what is the mark of god that is on the right hand and forehead? Without to much difficulty we find the reference to tfillin which you might know as phylacteries as written about in the New Testament. Tfillin are worn on the right hand and forehead by orthodox Jews during their morning prayer. When is the last time you have heard about or seen a Christian wearing tfillin? So obviously the mark of the beast is different from this mark of god.

Now here is the interesting part. It seems the mark of the beast is opposite god’s high Sabbaths and the seventh day sabbath [which it must be seen that the Jews observe]. Did the Church accept the mark while being told to avoid it? Admittedly there are some Christians [a minority by far] that do observe the seventh day Sabbath and the high Sabbaths but in general the Church does not observe the seventh day Sabbath [Saturday] nor do they observe the seven high Sabbaths that are the sign or signature [mark] of god.

I would like to ask one question of Christians. If you can’t find mistakes in this article, are you going to continue following the mark of the beast?

  1. After reading up a bit on “The Beast” I am more confused than before; 666 or 616; Nero, the Pope…or any number of other names equal the beast. Thanks for this post…you inspire me to learn more.

  2. Here’s a simple, practical scenario for how the introduction of the mark of the beast could play out in our times. Nothing to so with Sabbaths or phylacteries, actually, just things we all know about and use already. Read my free e-book Walkabout: The History of a Brief Century!

  3. Christians generally gather on the first day of the week to worship the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus of Nazareth, risen from the dead and now seated on the thone of God.

  4. The first day of the week is Sunday following the Sabbath or Saturday. Christians worship the Lamb of God and have already entered into the Sabbath-rest of God.
