  • Atheist Quotes

I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive: You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil--you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself.
    Dan Barker

He that will not reason is a bigot; he that cannot reason is a fool; he that dares not reason is a slave.
    William Drummond

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Two Rants

I have had two very different topics brought to me. One is the pseudo-intellectual question “why is there something instead of nothing” and the other is just the general Christian opposition to abortion. Maybe it’s just the time of year but I just have to rant on those two topics.

First one I will address is the question only asked by pseudo-intellectuals that call themselves agnostics [as if it is a third alternative to theism or atheism], theists that try to hide as their agenda or even make it quite clear and philosophers looking for a ‘scientific’ loophole to either justify their belief in god or to claim such a belief is reasonable. The reason I say only these three groups ask this question is that they are the only ones I have ever heard ask and I am willing to say they will be the only ones to ever ask in the future. First an extremely non-scientific answer to show what a really disingenuous and leading question this really is is that nothing can be defined as simply the absence of anything. Meaning space, time, energy, mass or particles are absent. This does not and can not happen in nature. If any of you reading this claim it does, please submit your evidence to me via the contact form and I will make sure it is examined by the greatest minds in science and that you will receive a Nobel, or I will just trash your stupidity. Something then is clearly seen as a natural state while nothing isn’t natural. If that isn’t enough to convince the less logically minded of you, you can either take a university level course on Quantum Mechanics or just read Victor Stenger’s paper on the subject. If you still want to believe in morons such as William Craig Lane and how he destroyed Victor Stenger in a debate about physics I have one question for you. How do you remember to breath?

My second rant [allow it, this is therapeutic for me] is about the Church’s opposition to abortion. The Church and every Christian , and some non-Christians that oppose abortion, claim it is biblical that says abortion is murder. Well is it? In a brand new translation of the bible, actually in the King James Version that was authorized in 1644 we read in Exodus 21:22

If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Which makes it quite clear that an aborted pregnancy that does not result in the death of the mother is not murder but a property crime that is to be fined monetarily not shot to death as some Christian ministers down in Florida thought proper.  You ask me it looks like some puritanical fundagelical Christian  somewhere decided it was wrong to abort children because that means one less possible convert to their stupidity and that in turn means on less hand to chip into the collection plate which strangely would mean that the preacher would have less money which means he would be following Jesus injunction to not be wealthy. Instead they chose to trump up some non-biblical injunction against murder when it clearly isn’t murder according to their own writings? And now every modern Christian that is against abortion believes it is because the bible says so.

Thanks for allowing my rants. Thanks even more for reading them.

  1. Thanks for Exodus 21:22, that’s very interesting…

  2. I don’t think you are properly imaging nothingness. Clearly there would not be nothing if that nothing existed within nature, as it would then be a part of something and therefore not nothing. Along with the absence of space, time, energy, and particles you should also imagine the absence of nature. Maybe that kind of nothing is nonsensical also but it doesn’t seem obvious to me that it is.
